The things worth your time this week

They say good design is invisible, but this week in Helsinki, the invisible is made visible with Helsinki Design Week. Celebrating the best in Finnish design, jump in with hands-on workshops, pick up something beautiful, or introduce the kids to the wonder and creativity that design can nuture.

Top picks for the week are the design market that kicks off the week in Kaapelitehdas on Saturday 29th. Here artisans and artists will be showing off their craftsmanship. Some vendors are offering discounts on the day. Find everything from ceramics, jewellery, clothing, homewares like rugs and baskets, candles and furniture to organic vegetables, art and photography.

If all of those craftspeople in one place inspire a little creativity and you want to get hands-on, 3 different workshops will be running over the weekend. A drawing and composition workshop by artist Milla-Maija Saari. A darning workshop where you can learn how to give new life to old clothes with fixes and sewing; bring a piece of clothing if you like. The sashiko workshop is a Japanese handstitching technique and will be used to work on denim. Bring your own or use pieces given. Each workshop costs €35

Before, you’d have to take a ferry to Sweden or wait for the few lucky times that K-market might have some pick and mix, but lately Bubs have been appearing on shop shelves and now they are opening their very own candy paradise on Keskuskatu where you can scoop as much as your heart desires. For all the candy lovers, they will also be selling merch such as t-shirts, hoodies, hats, socks and pins,. Great for gifts and because this pop won’t be around forever, grab them while you can.

Futuro house in collaboration with Marimekko, will be posting up in Kaisaniemi Botanic Gardens all weekend. An icon of Finnish design, made in the 1960’s with a dream of what houses of the future could look like. Now it has been reimagined with Marimekko interiors that we can all get behind. Now that autumn is closing in, it’s apple pie season, and Malminkartano apple orchard has got you covered. Turn up and collect apples for free, bring them home and get cooking. Be fair - don't overpick, leave some for others; a bucket per person is a decent haul. Bring a picnic and make a day of it for cosy autumn vibes. Kartanonkaari 29 opens 9am every day

For those who prefer to hit the trails than the bars, there will be a moonlight hike from Laajasalo to Kruunuvuori on Friday at 6pm. The hike will last around 3.5 hours through parks and and Aino Ackte villa , about 8km. Bring a snack in case you get hungry and enjoy the evening. First organised in the 1840s, venetsialaiset is a tradition that sends off the very last of summer in style and this year there are happenings all over Helsinki on Saturday 29th. We’ve picked some of the best.

Lauttasaari Kasinoranta to make a day of it, starting from 13 and going until evening. There will be music, magicians, street food, with vegan offerings, fried chicken, and Ape gelato will be on site with their treats, painting, a bouncy castle, and workshops.

Löyly don’t come for free - but there will be a live DJ set, drinks, atmosphere and a fireworks show. 18-22, Hernesaarenranta 4

Oil Tank 468 in Kruunuvuorenranta - for dinner and a light show in a former oil tank. Bring your own food and snacks or enjoy the street food, music and atmosphere.
